It is time for round two of the trip into classic-land. After DMJ last week we get the movie that made Marilyn Chambers a star, Behind the Green Door. I was around five when this movie came out and somehow missed it when I started renting porn a decade or so later. As a big Marilyn Chambers fan I have always been a bit worried about watching it. She was one of the first porn performers I watched and I have always enjoyed her work from the 80’s. After watching the sequel though and considering the way porn in the 70’s was shot I have always been afraid of what I might sit through with this one. Wow, that sounds really negative, but after DMJ my opinion of golden age smut hasn’t exactly risen. Perhaps Marilyn and the Mitchell Bros. can change that and add more than nostalgia and historic importance to my afternoon.

The movie begins in a diner, looking very much like a low-budget mainstream film from that time. The man behind the counter wants to hear the story of the “green door” from two of his regulars. Young Marilyn (Looking absolutely stunning by the way) arrives at a hotel. The man behind the desk places an ominous call and then we listen to some guy named Yank babble on at a table outside for about five minutes. To call this part unmotivated would be an understatement, but things pick up quickly when Marilyn is nabbed in front of her car later that night. Two guys throw her into a station wagon and whisk her away. The action shifts to a private club as Marilyn is dragged into her secret location. She is greeted by a woman who uses the words “Gloria” (Marilyn’s character’s name) and “relax” far too often. It is her job to prepare Gloria for what is to come. Massaging her body slowly, the other woman works on Gloria until she is nice and relaxed.

Outside the masked club-goers watch a mime go through her act. I guess that is the warm up for the main event. Marilyn is brought onstage (through a green door) and the audience is told that she will be ravished. Basically they are going to watch her raped, but as assured that she will be returned the next day unharmed and unaware. The show begins with several women stripping and rubbing Marilyn’s body. They work her into a frenzy with gentle caressing and tongues on her neck. It is very tame with just a hint of hair shown as one woman goes down on her. It is kind of sexy at first, but after a while I started to wonder why the people in the club weren’t nodding off to sleep. The lack of cheesy background music actually comes into play here and it’s not a good thing. Everyone in the scene is silent save for Marilyn who occasionally whimpers. Without any other sounds, there is this low buzz that is really annoying.

Now that she has been warmed up, Johnnie Keyes comes through the door wearing white tights with a hole cut out so that his long black cock is exposed. This gets her moaning a little louder though the angles are still very soft and wouldn’t hold up today. Johnnie remains silent as he just pumps away, kissing Marilyn on occasion. There is no visible shot from Keyes who then retreats back behind the green door.

More men are brought into the mix, coming down from the ceiling on swings. The diner scene ends without the full story being told, but we get to see that after he saved the beautiful young girl, this guy was treated to one hell of a reward. She sucks his cock and this time we actually get to see the action. The guy has a serious curve to his dick and we actually do get a pretty good view of the blowjob. When they start fucking we go back to more of the soft footage and end without a popshot.

Of the two classics I have reviewed in the past week, this is clearly the better flick. It’s technically better with a pretty decent picture quality for a movie that is thirty years old. Marilyn Chambers looks stunning in the movie, but she doesn’t exactly have to do any acting along the way. Basically she lies back and takes what they have to offer for half of the movie and then gets busy throughout the rest. As a feature, this one is pretty light on story. It’s a simple abduction and sex-cult show. The dialog is cheesy, the sex is well-shot in places though more soft-core than anything we would see today. It is interesting, it is sometimes sexy and it’s certainly a classic. I just don’t think it’s very strokeable.
