Tina Tyler: Laugher is the Best Medicine

Vacation Blog from Tina Tyler

For those of you who don’t know, Tina Tyler is an amazing example of just how far talent, brains and a great attitude can take someone. She’s an award-winning performer (And one of the early Gang Bang Girls) who was famous for a number of things including on screen BJ’s that were…well, let’s just say she could give lessons. She is also an award-winning director who has thrilled us with a number of original lines over the years including Fresh Out the Box from Mercenary Pictures. Off screen Tina is one of the brightest and most honest women in the industry. She’s outspoken, unafraid and I always enjoy hearing what she has to say. (Even when I don’t agree with it.) I am proud to have her back as a guest blogger this year. I thank her for her contributions and her friendship.

Laughter is the best medicine

Last month the Just for Laughs Festival was held in Montreal. Being a huge fan of comedy and comedians this was something that I looked forward to with great anticipation, not only because the city was filling up with my favourite comics, but also one of those comics is a friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in a while. The one show I was looking forward to the most was the Lewis Black Gala. I am a huge fan of Mr. Black and his rants and my friend, had set me up with a ticket.

My friend, Alonzo, took me back stage before the show to meet Lewis Black, who couldn’t have been nicer or more generous with his time. He signed my copy of Me of Little Faith and chatted for a few minutes. Met his management team also, who couldn’t have been more kind as they watched me slop sugar all over Mr. Black. I probably embarassed myself a little, but there are a scant few people in this world that would make me star struck, and Lewis Black is one of them.

After that meeting I went to the theatre and took my seat in the 6th row (damn great seat) and laughed my ass off for the whole show. Walked home from the St. Denis theatre and was really more tired than I should have been. The next day I woke up feeling achy and weak. I called my doctor, who explained to me that is was just the chemo catching up with me and, contrary to my thinking, I am not indestructible. I was advised to stay home and rest for the next few days, which pissed me off, as I had an all access pass to whatever comedy event I wanted to go to and had planned to take in at least 3 or 4 more shows over the next 2 days. Instead I was stuck in my apartment watching TV.

My most heartfelt thanks to Alonzo and Lewis Black for making that night a very special one and one I will not soon forget.

So I guess the point is that laughter helps, but chemo kicks laughter’s ass!
