EMMReport Interviews Karim Z About the Unlikely Journey Behind Reina Reborn
A new EMMReport feature traces how an inexperienced married suburban dad turned a COVID-era obsession into a 15-day, music-driven adult film with climate-change ambitions.
CHICAGO — EMMReport has released a new feature interview with Karim Z examining the improbable creation of Reina Reborn, a music-driven adult film that grew from a COVID-era riff on a drinking sequence in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels into a roughly 15-day production with 11 hardcore scenes, 16 songs, and a large ensemble cast. Karim entered the project as a married suburban dad with no filmmaking or adult-industry experience, after losing his crypto gains, facing a giant tax bill, and returning unhappily to office work. “I had all this money. I had all this time, and I did nothing with it except just piss it away,” he says. Once he rebuilt some capital, the project became impossible to ignore. “It really was just a manic, crazy idea,” he says, describing a path that included difficult negotiations with his wife, an abandoned plan to shoot in Brazil, unsuccessful outreach, failed professional relationships, and an auspicious connection with Michael Vegas and Siouxsie Q that finally turned into the core production team.
The feature tracks Karim through casting Valentina Nappi and Nicole Kitt as the female leads, learning how to direct in real time, building 14 original songs with Lucas Hickory, navigating multiple edits after a post-production depressive crash, and confronting the enormous gap between the film’s cost and its commercial return. Karim says the project began with only “a 10 percent chance of success,” but profitability was never its sole purpose. He wanted the scale and spectacle of adult entertainment to draw attention to climate change. “I wanted to make the greatest adult film,” he says, arguing that familiar forms of advocacy have not produced enough action: “It doesn’t seem like anything else is working, so why don’t we try something else?” Reina Reborn is now available through Reborn Cinema in its original form and in a shorter, more plot-focused cut, while Karim considers whether the footage could also support a soft-core version and hopes award-season recognition will bring more viewers to the film.
