Weekend Notes: TV & Movies

Just some non-porn thoughts from the big and small screen.
The Cooler/Kill Bill 2 As always, the weekend was movie time at the Casa de Pipe. We rented a small pile of DVDs from the local store including a couple of really good flicks. I had already seen “Kill Bill 2” but watched it with Mrs. Rog who found it pretty good. On second viewing I think that 2 might actually be a bit better than 1 and is certainly worth adding to the DVD collection when it is officially released on Tuesday. The best movie of the weekend was “The Cooler” with William H Macy and Alec Baldwin. It’s a quite flick with a lot Vegas nostalgia. Both Macy and Baldwin were fantastic though if memory serves it was Alec who got the Oscar nom. Consider that big mainstream vid-pick of the weekend. (Oh and have any of you taken my advice and watched “City of God”? I know that director Bryan Xin was already hip to this amazing flick, but so far no one has written in to tell me their thoughts.)

Big Brother My summer TV obsession is getting better with each passing episode. I don’t know how many of you are following the adventures, but watching Jase and Scott slowly go from testosterone-drunk alpha males to utter failures is rather gratifying. The big fake nominations thing on Saturday’s show was one of the hottest things I have ever seen. I just wonder how long it’s going to take the truth to sink into Jase’s thick skull. Score one for the good guys…so far.

The Village: In addition to the stack of video rentals, Mrs. Rog and I took in a movie this weekend as part of a little anniversary celebration. I have been a big fan of M Night Shyamalan’s work from the start so I was looking forward to “The Village” for a while. It’s very slow, intentionally so, but beautifully shot. It may be his best looking flick to date. There are twists along the way of course and I’m happy to report that I nailed it about a quarter of the way through. I think most of you will like it as long as you aren’t looking for a horror flick. (As a friend of mine who hated the movie was.)

Mainstream DVDs to Buy This week Kill Bill 2 comes out so that is a must own. There is also a special edition of The Lost Boys that looks like a pretty cool disc for anyone who loved that flick. (I did.) Next week is the big TV box set week, but for now these two should keep ya happy.
