INTERVIEW: ROBBY D

Okay, they've run out of hot girls, so now I have to interview Robby D.

Now it's time for the hot guys.

Scott Nails?

(He laughs) Oh, so now you like Scott Nails?

I like what Scott is nailing. How's that?

(He laughs)

Between working with Shay and going home with Lacie.

I wonder if Scott could get laid, if it wasn't for me paying all these girls to sleep with him.

There's the quote of the year. That's the interview-we're done.

(He laughs)

Somehow, I'm thinking that he might still get laid.

I don't know. The consensus says no.

So you think you made Scott Nails.

Yeah.

So you think you should get Lacie once in a while?

I do, yeah. Eat your heart out.

Print that, Luke Ford.

Yeah. (He laughs)

Okay, let's talk a little bit. Robby D, Digital Playground director, jackass, jack-of-all-trades.

I prefer 'master-of-all-trades,' actually.

I don't know if I'd go that far.

Come on, now. I don't want that stigma. I want master of all.

No, no, no. You're the jackass of porn.

Oh, you're killing me. I'm not. Because if I was, I'd have seven $10,000 Rolexes on my arm at one time, and my wife would be wearing four more. Print that. (He laughs)

Apparently, we're going to print that. Okay. Yeah, I don't have to edit these any more, so it's going live.

Uh-oh.

We're actually live on the Internet right now.

Yeah, okay. (He laughs)

What do we talk about? We've done this every year.

We can talk about what's in store for next year.

Yeah, let's do that.

Let's talk about what happened this year.

We can talk about this. What did you do this year?

What did I do this year? I actually had the opportunity to start Handheld Pictures, which is my own, independent company and it's being distributed exclusively through Digital Playground right now. I've been able to do just what I want to do. You know, shooting porn or whatever. What it really gave me the opportunity to do is start paying attention to the reviewers, critics and the fans this year, because I've never done that before. I've always done movies just for me, or what I felt like doing, and I think that that got me really far. But my competition's big heel is that he was always such a critic's guy or a reviewer's guy or a fan's guy. And that, I knew, was really the big difference between the two of us. So this year, the internet got better, and people got more aware of what's going on, and it was represented better on their end, on the viewer's end, enough to make a lot of companies pay attention. With ADT and all the other affiliates that provide a podium now, you can really talk to the consumers and the fans and get the input, no matter how ridiculous. And so this year, I started reading what the guys were saying, and paying more attention, and doing movies now targeted at the consumer. I don't know if it's really a sell-out, it's just more of a business move. What happened was, while doing that, I got to get turned on to new ideas. It's really cool. It's like they opened my eyes. You know, like with multiples. I never shot multiples, so I talked to Rog, who tells me, 'Yeah, you know, multiples are great, give them a shot.' Fuck, I love them. They're such a total new, complete challenge for me that it was really exciting, it really opened everything up. So, you know, paying attention to you guys this year got me an award.

You're jumping ahead.

Oh yeah. You got me an award at AVN, and at Berlin.

You won at Berlin.

Oh yeah. And it just gave me the opportunity to find out what was going on. I have five titles a month that I do, sometimes more, which is a lot. Especially at the caliber that we do movies. I shoot 28 days a month almost. I don't have the time to spend on the internet, figuring that stuff out, so I have to grab the information as quick as I can, soak up what I can, and that usually works by calling you, saying, 'Hey, what do you think? What should I do? What's going on? What's better? What's not?'

So, where's the movie of me fucking Shay and Jesse? Every time you call, that's all I hear about.

I thought you didn't want me to release that footage.

Well, I keep hearing about this secret, mystery feature you guys are doing. That's what I figure it's going to be.

Well, for next year, I plan on continuing like this, but doing more. I want to talk more to the guys, more to the reviewers. Maybe not so much on the chat lines, because a lot of it is just so full of shit. If you spend enough time on the Internet, you can weed out the bullshit guys, and pay attention to the guys that know what they're talking about. This AstroNight guy seems pretty clever, this Bono1 guy is actually popping up in my head a lot when I'm reading it, and theen there are the guys are the ones I don't want to be affiliated with. I don't care what they say. So, I figure it out by asking, 'What do you want to see next year?' It's just as much you guys telling me what to do, because it gives me something to do. I look at it and I go, 'Fuck. That's hot. That was really great.' So I want to know what all you guys are interested in now, because a lot of it is getting really boring. It's getting really competitive, because we're all doing the same stuff. I have to figure out how to change it the right way, because if you change it, everyone gets mad at you. But if you do the same stuff, everybody gets mad at you.

So the only winning move is not to play?

Sometimes, yeah. (He laughs) It's a challenge. You don't know what to do. But that's why I do this job, because of the challenges. But that's what I'm about, facing challenges and going after other director's awards, going after some other demographic, whether it's the features crowd, whether it's the Pirates crowd, or it's a Control crowd. Or challenging movies better, maybe not slow-motion, whatever. I'm constantly trying to evolve, learn more. I don't even remotely feel like I've started yet, and that's sincere. I don't even feel like I've been here very long. I haven't even warmed up, I haven't really even started trying. I'm still having fun and goofing around. I'm anxious to see what happens, and where it's going to go. I'm looking forward to it, because all-in-all, I'm really a number-one fan. I love porn, more than anything else. Except talking to you. (He laughs)

Very nice. Now, this year, we saw the Control kind of hit its' stride. That was kind of a new series, as we just talked about it last year. That was something new, totally different for you, and it's still kind of evolving, right?

Yeah. Well, Control is one of those ones that can go forever because it has no rules, and it has no guidelines. It's kind of just everything, a convelation, but it's not even really a convelation because convelations are 15 hours of tit fucks, you know? 15 hours of blonde blowjobs. Control is different every time. Control is one of those great things that I can always fall back on. I can always just shoot something because I was really horny for it. There's no theme to it. That's what I look forward to most in porn, is a movie that isn't themed. I like that a lot.

Shay still doesn't believe that you called me when Jack's Asian Adventures came out, and you know, I kind of have a thing for Asian girls.

Kinda.

Yeah. You asked me who my favorite Asian in the business was. And I gave you two names. Do you remember?

Yes. They were my same two. Nautica Thorn and Shay Jordan.

Yes, and then my third was Mika Tan, yours was Tia Tanaka.

Yup.

At that time, Shay had one movie out.

That's right.

She's that freaking hot.

You know, I keep telling people up here that the buzz I'm picking up on so far is Shay Jordan. I mean, the buzz about Shay is off the hook. Everybody likes Shay Jordan. Shay's cool to hang out with, she's like one of the guys that you want to fuck, so it's great. (He laughs) It's like having a buddy that you can fuck. Not to say that I don't want to fuck you, Rog.

Right. Shay has a nicer ass than I do.

Right. But there's definitely a solid, positive buzz about Shay. Shay is really smart. She's just great, and that's probably the greatest compliment to Digital Playground this year.

Now, you just recently added Lacie Hart and Katsumi.

Yeah, absolutely. There's another Asian. She would be number four for me.

She's hot.

Here we go. For me, it would be Nautica, Tia, Shay, and Katsumi. But I'd probably have to fuck all three of them first, before I got to Shay, because she's too much like a friend now.

She's not my friend.

Fuck you, Shay. (He laughs) Shay, I want to fuck you. Thank you!

Ruin someone else's interview. Nice job.

Well, hey, you're the only one who counts.

Why thank you.

So, Katsumi. I've been shooting Katsumi for a while. Now that she's got her new boobs and she's lost weight and she's trying to move in a different direction, it brings us to another level, because each year we strive to get to another level. It's a real competition we feel within ourselves. We really don't view others too much. I'm probably the most competitive person, in terms of viewing other people's projects. So we want to strive each year to push it in a different direction, and Katsumi definitely brings that to the table for us with the kind of sexuality that she encompasses. Katsumi is hot.

I think we've covered everything, then. Do you have a website? Is there a RobbyD.com?

There is a RobbyD.com, and all I really have is my box covers on it, and what's coming up on all the next box covers before they're released. That links to all the trailers at Digital Playground target="_new">Digital Playground. There will be a RobbyD.com eventually, with more than just the box covers.

Are you going to put up a message board where we can all comment about how much you suck?

Yeah yeah. Absolutely. You can do that. Everyone does that anyways.

RobbyD sucks?

On other message boards. (He laughs)

Alright, then. We have now come to the presentation moment.

Yes!

2006 Rog Reviews' Critics Choice for Best Director-oh, this is a misprint.

Oh, no it's not! No! (He laughs)

It's Ian Makai.

No! (He laughs)

For some reason, they put your name on this.

I will gladly take it to Ian.

It does go to Robby D.

Nice. (He whoops for joy) Sorry.

You're not going to say that you're king of the world, right?

I'm king of the world! This is a thrill. This is good. This is the one I want. This is the award I want. I've got Berlin, I've got AVN. I've been everywhere and gotten all the other ones. Out of all of them, this is the one that I wanted. Really, because this is the one, in my mind, that means I worked, I listened, and I fucking moved forward. All the others, I feel, are political, and that's fine, because you do need politics in business.

And you know this isn't political, because you tried cash.

(He laughs) Yeah, I tried cash, I tried everything.

You tried the gift basket.

I tried Shay. I tried it all! And you know, you refused her, so I know that this is the real-deal. This is awesome, and you know, my competition has won this before.

Many times.

I wanted to take it.

Well, now it's yours. The question is, can you keep it?

Oh yeah. Once I get it, I can keep it.

Okay, well, before we go, I've got to ask your opinion on alt porn.

Yeah?

What do you think of alt porn?

Alt porn?

Yes.

It's a joke.

Why?

It's totally unattractive. Maybe if they got some good directors.

Well, wait a minute. Now, you've got some ink on you, right?

Is that all it is?

So you have the look, right?

Well, I think that the bottom line is, porn is supposed to make you horny, and there's a formula for that. Everybody mixes it up and approaches it differently. Some guys hit the formula on the head, and you get awards. Other guys just flail about, they do their own art thing, and I think that's great if you're trying to make a statement or it turns you on. But this is a business, and you need to target that demographic. In the business, they want to jack off, and I don't see a lot of guys jerking off to alt porn. So, whatever. I've seen it, it's their thing.

You've got a classic movie where you had James Deen.

Oh shit.

And bless him. James is a good actor and a great performer. He's a big old boy.

Yeah.

You had him kind of mock that persona a little bit.

(He laughs) Oh yeah. We did that on the spur of the moment. I think that was James' idea. (He laughs) We threw him into some white clothes and let him do some of the characteristic things he does for some of the other guys. James swears up and down to me that he's not really an alt porn guy, he just keeps getting cast for it. If you look back further, James was a MILF guy for a long time.

That's true.

He had those famous moves.

Maybe he was working his way up.

(He laughs) Maybe. I liked that skit. It was really fun, making fun of it.

That was in which movie?

Uh, damn, thanks. (He laughs) Uh, probably my first porn.

Definitely one of my first porn movies.

Yeah. I had a good time, doing that stuff. James is fun. He likes goofing off like that. If you've got to look for something funny to do, what better way than alt porn?

And it's so easy, it writes itself, right?

Yeah! Alt porn, what is that? Is it an alternative to porn? I don't get it.

Wouldn't an alternative to porn be the View?

Yeah. I don't get it, man.

What makes me want to jerk off the least?

Yeah! So, long live alt porn. God bless. (He laughs)

There you go. Thank you, and congratulations, and we'll see you next year.

Yes, you will. And with more of these!
