Robby D. Interview 2004 - Robby D's & Movies

INTERVIEW: ROBBY D

We are here at AEE with Robby D…

Who is not a very fun interview Rog. I want to say that up front. Good luck.

Don't worry I will make it painless.

Do you have any tequila?

I wish.

This is going to be hard.

It's fine. If things get boring I can always ask you about Jayme Waxman.

So you're the Rog who knows Jayme. That explains a lot. When I first met her, you are the one who had told her all about me.

I didn't tell her everything.

You told her some things. You told her that the girls seem to like me. I love that girl. She is intellectual, funny, quirky, simulating and creative.

And hot.

No comment, but yeah.

She is supposed to be here this weekend.

My girlfriend won't let me hang out with Jayme any more.

I heard you had a girlfriend.

Yeah, Celeste, formerly known as Bunny Luv.

Very nice.

She directed the last two Andrew Blake movies, "Dollhouse" and "Hard Edge".

Last year I interviewed her and she was strictly into girls. Did you turn her around?

That makes me feel real secure because I know that she isn't with me, she's with another girl. It's pretty cool. She is an amazing girl.

Let's get off your social life and talk about your career.

I'd rather talk about my social life.

How did you get started?

Man you can do better than that. Everyone asks that.

How did you end up at Digital Playground?

I worked at Vivid for four years and started their gonzo lines. I created Action Sports Sex, The Watcher and Color Blind. I put them on the map as a gonzo company. Then I started doing features which I don't like, but I was their go-to guy. I like being able to create things and fill a niche. Digital had Nic Andrews doing their big features and brought me in to do the two-day wonders. Once I proved myself to them I was able to create "Jack's Playground."

How many volumes have you shot?

Six have been released, we have up to number eleven in the can.

Devon said she just shot a scene for 13.

Yeah, oh wow. It was better than anything I have ever shot with her. She was spectacular.

It was Ben English right?

Yeah, that scene is beyond great.

That guy has a seriously big dick.

I'm bigger than that.

Really?

No, I AM a bigger dick, but I don't have a bigger dick.

How did Devon handle it?

She did great. Devon is one of my favorite girls to shoot.

Did she have anything to do with you coming to Digital?

No. My friend Nic Andrews was here. I was on his set for "Stripped" and it just happened. I really like and respect Joone so I went for it. I felt I could grow bigger here.

"Jack's Playground" is different from anything you did at Vivid. Is this something close to your heart?

Out of all of my projects, my favorite are "Beat the Devil" and "Jack's Playground." If you take everything in the industry that I like and admire and compare them, I would say that "Jack's Playground" is the coolest thing on the market. It has a lot of room to grow and I'm not patting myself on the back, but I'm proud of it. I wanted a Mad TV meets Jackass and I wanted fun. Everyone knows that I am very into the technical side of things. I can tell you what kind of depth of field I get with a 75mm lens. Since I have come here, I have more of the director's side handed to me. I am thinking more like a director and evoke emotion. I am less meticulous about how it's shot and more interested in what emotion it creates. That is where "Jack's Playground" came from. It is a lot of work, but it is so much fun. We character profiled everyone from age twelve on and have so much room to grow.

Is it harder to make than a feature?

By a longshot. It takes me anywhere from eleven to fifteen days to do a show as compared to a few days for a feature. It is way more work because of the thought process involved. The more you watch it, the more you will understand what's going on. It isn't supposed to look perfect, but there is a big picture to consider. I went to UCLA film school so it's fun to mess it up and throw things off a bit. There are a lot of things in "Jack's Playground" where some things look shitty on purpose. It is a lot of work to make something like it's home-made.

There are a lot of scenes in the Jack movies where a girl doesn't do a full scene. The norm in porn is that we see a girl, she gets naked and she fucks, that's the rule.

Fuck the rules. How tired are you of the rules. Look at these girls who don't fuck. If you saw them fuck it would be over. The fantasy would be gone. I incorporate the tease and I believe in that.

Were you a porn fan when you got into the business?

Huge. I was the biggest fan of John Staglinao. I am here because of Buttman. I was a huge fan and I thought that I could do it. Then I met Henri Pachard and he helped me. I owe those two guys everything. Stagliano is it as far as I'm concerned.

Is there anyone in the business you would really like to see in a "Jack's Playground."

Yeah. I have always wanted to shoot Aria Giovanni. To me she is the hottest girl in the industry other than my girlfriend.

Are we going to see Celeste in your movies?

She is in them all the time. Celeste is a recurring character in the Jack movies. Every time I go to her house there is loud techno music coming from downstairs and she has these hot girls who try to steal away for a music video. She hates the camera though so I don't think we will be seeing her in a scene.

Well she is a director now.

Yeah, she is doing better than I am. Not just anyone can come out of nowhere and direct two features for Andrew Blake.

Who is a better director, you or her?

Me, but don't tell her I said that.

If you could pick one of your movies that you think is the best, what would it be.

"Beat the Devil" or the Jack's Playground line, but they are totally different genres. I think that "Beat the Devil" is the most unique movie, but Jack's is a whole concept.

How important is fan feedback to you?

It's very important. I take what they say and incorporate what I can, but I can't make everything that they write in about happen. I had someone write in and say "I want to see Monica Mendez take it in the ass." I can't make that happen. Someone else wrote in and said "I want to see Rog giving a blowjob" but I can't make that happen right now.

Because you won't pay my rate. If you won't pony up the twenty bucks then I can't work for you.

Can I get a two for one or a bit of a discount? I will make you famous. I can put you right up here on the back wall right between Jesse Jane and Devon.

What is coming up for you?

I am working on some more features, but I want to focus on comedy. My editors are from the mainstream comedy world and they are pushing me to new heights. We are thinking about maybe making a Montel movie, or maybe something like "Gonzo: The Movie."

Have you seen any of the porn comedies on the shelves now?

Yeah, I've seen them.

Are any of them impressive to you?

No. I'm not that impressed.

Could you do better?

I don't know, but we are going to try. The big guys with the big money don't impress me as much as the little guys who do their own thing. Sometimes the guys at Wicked get it right. There was one where they were supposed to be in film school and made a porno instead. That movie was great, all the rest suck.

What is the best sex scene you have ever shot?

I like the solo stuff that I shoot. Sex is really personal so it's a hard thing for me to say. I liked the solo with a French girl named Mika. Those are my favorites. I got three nominations for my solo scenes this year.

Do you have any other nominations?

I have a total of fourteen nominations this year.

So the booth will be filled with awards on Sunday.

I doubt that very much. I don't win awards. I create my own genres and my features are two-day wonders and my gonzos are not kill-fuck movies.

So you are saying that you are too far ahead of the voters for them to get you.

I didn't say that. You said that.

Thank you for the interview.

Thank you for making it painless and almost fun Rog.

That's my job.
