Rog Podcasts: 2015 AVN Awards Voting: Part One

www.ElegantAngel.com
Once again it is time to talk about the AVN Awards. In this first part of our yearly series, we cover the basics. We also start out with topics suggested by adult film critic Houston Don and our very first sponsor Sawyer Cleavage. (Email me for sponsorship rates)

Podcast One covers the basics, why I am, what the AVN Awards voting process looks like, how we are going to cover this etc. I also take on the first topic suggested on Twitter, the conversion by some companies from screener DVDs to on-line only viewing.

2015 AVA Awards Podcasts Part One: Overview of 2015 Podcasts, Voting Rules, Suggested Topics. Sponsored by @sawyercleavage

This is our fourth year in a row covering the AVN Awards. This a series of podcasts dedicated to the 2015 AVN Awards, the nominees and the voting process. The clips will be here for you to enjoy. Please feel free to comment below or drop me an email with any questions or topics or thoughts send to rog@rogreviews.com or @RogerTPipe on Twitter.

As a voter for the past several AVN Awards, I have been lucky enough to take part in this huge event. The podcasts will cover the process as well as break down several of the categories. They will highlight some of my favorites and discuss some interesting choices and the “can’t miss” titles/performers from the past year.

I hope you enjoy these. As always, your feedback is very welcome. Let me know what you think of the podcasts, the categories, the voting, tell me I am wrong or just tell me how fucking great this whole thing is.

One Response to “Rog Podcasts: 2015 AVN Awards Voting: Part One”

  1. Don Houston says:

Um, thanks for the um, shout out (kidding).
One of the areas touched upon was the online experience vs disc. As a rule, I do not review online titles though in a pinch and under very narrow circumstances, I will watch one for voting purposes in one of the award groups I participate in. The problem is twofold for me, for one, I usually watch review movies on a large screen, high definition television with much more resolution than my far, far smaller computer monitor. At this writing, it would translate to lowering the rating grade at least one level and given my generally tougher standards, few companies want that. The second part of the equation is that my computer system is older and prone to locking up or having problems streaming lengthy movies at a decent bitrate, interruptions, pixelation, and other issues with streaming get in the way. Once discs are no longer made and the playing field is once again “level”, I may just tie my new computer into my brand new TV but a company saving a couple of bucks is a bad reason given all some of them spend advertising, hiring marketing people, and the like (if it was solely a matter of expense, they can ship discs media mail which is dirt cheap compared to how I send them to my review team).

The other topic of particular interest was regarding director B. Skow on the “cutting edge” of extreme movies. I like the guy and we talk on the phone occasionally, email or DM; heck, I’ve been one of his biggest supporters for years. That said, the whole “dark” movie experience focusing on rape, murder, kidnapping, and the like does nothing for me sexually or as entertainment. I get it though, he and GF Films believe that nothing sells like a controversy, their stance when “Poor Little Shyla” outsold their other works awhile back. My discussions with distributors that rebuke this belief aside, the resulting titles Skow has come up with began as headline news and then were “re-imagined” in an even darker, more sexually driven way by the director and friend David Stanley to the point where the concept alone is gross. You should discuss the greater implications with porn sociologist Doc Chauntelle for greater depth but cashing in a story about a kidnapped girl held prisoner for 10 years and raped the entire time is hardly strokable to most people that I’ve met. If this kind of thing was released by any other company, half the industry would be up in arms calling for prosecutions but as GF Films has been so female friendly, they get a pass. Does that sound right?
    No thanks!
